The dordogne is a department of the south-west of france, situated in the aquitaine region
the dordogne department is spread across the périgord plateau. in the east it is a raised limestone plateau and dips in the west to the saintonge and guyenne plains. many rivers run through the dordogne : the bandiat, the dronne, the isle, the auvezere, the dordogne, the vezere and the dropt. the landais and the double forests cover the west of the department.
the perigord countryside is therefore very varied.
the chief town of the department is perigueux, and the three major subdivisions of the department are headed by bergerac, nontron and sarlat-la-caneda.
